India's planned transmission investment and renewable-energy expansion could lift aluminium consumption in electrical applications to 4 million tonnes by FY30.

India's push to expand its electricity transmission network is emerging as a major potential growth driver for aluminium, with the country's electrical-sector consumption of the metal projected to rise sharply as renewable generation and power demand expand.

The Ministry of Mines Aluminium Vision Document projects aluminium consumption in electrical applications to increase from around 2.4 million tonnes in FY24 to 4 million tonnes by FY30, before reaching 12.9 million tonnes by FY47.

Transmission and distribution already represent a major source of domestic aluminium demand. Around 48 per cent of aluminium consumed in India is used in the power transmission and distribution sector, according to the source material.

The scale of infrastructure spending planned over the coming years could therefore translate into a sizeable additional market for aluminium products used in the electricity network.

INR 9,150 billion transmission investment

Under the National Electricity Plan (2023–2032), India plans to invest more than INR 9,150 billion (USD 96.53 billion) in transmission infrastructure.

The programme includes more than 1.91 lakh circuit km of new transmission lines and around 1,270 GVA of transformation capacity. A key objective is to develop evacuation corridors capable of integrating more than 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030.

The network expansion is also intended to improve inter-regional connectivity, allowing electricity generated in renewable-rich areas to reach emerging consumption centres.

That creates a direct link with aluminium demand because overhead transmission networks rely extensively on aluminium-based conductors.

Transmission lines create aluminium demand

The amount of aluminium required varies considerably depending on voltage, conductor design and the configuration used.

An indicative calculation in the source material shows that every 10,000 circuit km of new transmission capacity could require roughly:

36,000 tonnes of aluminium in a 220 kV single-Zebra configuration

88,000 tonnes in a 400 kV twin-Moose configuration

176,000 tonnes in a 765 kV four-bundle configuration

These figures illustrate why India's transmission expansion could become an important demand channel for the metal.

Aluminium's combination of electrical conductivity, low weight and durability makes it well suited to overhead power transmission. Its lower weight compared with copper also allows longer spans with less sag, supporting its use across extensive transmission and distribution networks.

Renewables add another layer of demand

Renewable generation is increasingly being developed away from major electricity consumption centres, requiring dedicated transmission infrastructure to evacuate power. At the same time, new sources of electricity demand are emerging from manufacturing clusters, electric mobility, green hydrogen and data centres.

The combination means that India will need to build not only more generation capacity, but also the infrastructure required to move that electricity across the country.

For aluminium producers, this could strengthen demand for value-added products linked directly to the electrical sector, particularly wire rods, alongside more traditional markets such as construction and automotive.

Domestic producers positioned for the shift

Vedanta Aluminium has around 2.4 million tonnes of installed aluminium capacity and produces wire rods, billets, ingots and rolled products. Its portfolio includes electrical-grade wire rods used in applications such as cables and conductors.

A Vedanta spokesperson said the company's focus on electrical-grade wire rods reflects the growing importance of transmission infrastructure as renewable generation and new electricity demand centres expand.

With India's transmission network entering a prolonged investment cycle, the country's aluminium demand could increasingly be tied to the build-out of its power system.

The projected rise from 2.4 million tonnes of electrical-sector aluminium consumption in FY24 to 4 million tonnes by FY30 points to the scale of the opportunity. If transmission expansion, renewable integration and new electricity-intensive industries continue along the planned trajectory, power infrastructure could become a significant long-term demand engine for India's aluminium industry.
