Steelworkers' labor contract with Constellium rolling mill at Ravenswood set to expire
The mill employs about 1,000 people. It is Jackson County's largest employer.
Jason Miller, president of Steelworkers Local 5668, did not return a phone call Thursday afternoon. A person who answered the phone at the local's union hall said Miller and others were unavailable because they were in negotiations.
Nicholas Brun, Constellium's vice president of communications, did not reply Thursday afternoon to an email seeking comment.
Amy Shuler Goodwin, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin's director of communications, said Thursday, "Gov. Tomblin is aware of the negotiations going on and hopes both parties come to an agreement soon."
The mill's workers have been working under a labor agreement that was signed in 2010. A strike was averted and that contract was signed at the last minute.
Alcan Engineered Products formerly owned the Ravenswood mill, which it operated under a subsidiary, Alcan Rolled Products.
Rio Tinto, an international mining company, acquired Alcan in 2007 and announced its intention to divest Alcan Engineered Products.
In 2011 Apollo Global Management Limited Liability Co, a global investment management company, acquired 51 percent of Alcan Engineered Products; Fonds Strategique d'Investissement, a sovereign wealth fund operated by the French government, acquired 10 percent; while Rio retained 39 percent.
The company's name was changed to Constellium.
Constellium specializes in value-added aluminum products in the aerospace and automotive industries.
The mill is adjacent to Century Aluminum's aluminum smelter, which has been shut down since February 2009.
