Speira's green commitment: Aims to reduce the carbon footprint in Holmestrand by 150,000 tonnes

Speira's substantial industrial investment in Norway's Vestfold province is materialising with the installation of a new furnace, costing over NOK 400 million. The project, set to integrate the furnace into Speira's Holmestrand foundry, is slated for completion by summer 2026, marking a significant expansion effort.

Speira's supervisory bodies have so far approved a NOK 414 million investment for a new furnace dedicated to recycled materials at their foundry in Holmestrand. This furnace has been a long-desired addition to the Holmestrand site, enabling it to process an additional 22,000 tonnes of scrap annually.

"This investment secures a large number of jobs in Holmestrand for the foreseeable future. The old furnace has been in place for 50 years, and the new one is expected to last at least another 50 years. This is very good news," added Jon Gaasholt, plant manager at Speira Holmestrand.

Consequently, approximately half of Speira's production will rely on recycled scrap, significantly reducing Holmestrand's carbon footprint by 150,000 tonnes of CO2. The new furnace will also decrease NOx emissions and odours from the site, and it is designed to facilitate a future transition to non-fossil energy sources, further minimising emissions.

Since its spin-off from Hydro in 2021, Speira has embarked on several significant investments in Norway. With nearly NOK 600 million invested over the past three years, the rolling and recycling company has acquired state-of-the-art equipment for its Holmestrand operations and at its Karmøy facility. Alongside the new furnace, Speira has also upgraded multiple production lines.

“We have a stated goal of setting the standard for sustainability in our industry. It is about being strongly connected to the community where we work and live, and being conscious of the role we can play in securing a sustainable future. Optimization of production, processing, and recycling are key in this context. Investment in new equipment is crucial for Speira to remain competitive in the future. The new furnace will help cement our position as a leading player in rolled and recycled aluminum products. We have talented people on our team, and it’s exciting to see how our skilled employees work hard to ensure our success every single day. I am proud to showcase what we achieve here in Holmestrand,” added Gaasholt.
