Rio Tinto Group’s efforts to expand its presence in battery materials are drawing attention following progress on graphene-based battery technology developed with Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG), alongside the miner’s third-quarter 2026 production update.
Under a joint development agreement between the companies, GMG has reported progress on its graphene G®CELLS technology, which the supplied report describes as maintaining performance over rapid charging cycles. The development adds a technology-focused dimension to Rio Tinto’s wider battery materials strategy, although it is not yet identified as a current earnings driver.
Rio Tinto’s latest operating figures provide the broader production context. The company reported 15.7 million tonnes of bauxite, 0.8 Mt of aluminium and 2.1 Mt of alumina production in the third quarter of 2026. It also produced 13.0 thousand tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) and 205 kt of copper.

According to the report, production across these core commodities over the first nine months of 2026 tracked at broadly similar levels, pointing to steady operating performance rather than a major change in the company’s near-term outlook.
The graphene G®CELLS development represents a potential longer-term opportunity rather than an established contributor to earnings. Rio Tinto’s near-term performance remains linked to project delivery, commodity prices and capital allocation, including how the company balances investment spending with shareholder returns.
Over time, its position in copper and lithium, alongside its established aluminium and other mining operations, could shape its exposure to demand associated with electrification. However, the commercial significance of the graphene battery collaboration will depend on further development and evidence of its potential beyond the progress outlined in the report.
