Under President Akufo-Addo’s government in Ghana, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Samuel Abu Jinapor has assured people for no deliberate exploitation of the Atewa Forest area. They will rather try to utilise it for the benefit of the Ghanaian people.

“Government and GIADEC continue to be fully committed to the preservation of the Atewa Forrest and ensure that the exploitation of the bauxite in Atewa is in the ultimate interest of the Ghanaian people and is in the public interest. They are also working to ensure that the integrity of the forest is preserved,” Jinapor said.
On April 24, 2022, while speaking with the Aljazeera media network, the Minister agreed that Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) considers Atewa Forrest as one of the primary projects, thoroughly pursued along with Awaso, Nyinahin-Mpasaaso, Kyebi and Valco projects. All of this has been initiated with the objective to form an integrated iron and aluminium industry.
Mr Jinapor also added, “Government is therefore putting in place measures to ensure that particularly, bauxite and iron ore are built with the full value chain retained here in Ghana and we have created bureaucracies here like the GIADEC and GISDEC which are going to be responsible for building the full value chain of this bauxite and iron ore.”
The country’s industrial drive is nurtured by these minerals which also fuel its economy. The Minister pointed out that there must be a state of absolute balance between mining bauxite and preserving the environment because the former has a lot of harmful residues while the latter is necessary to save the upcoming generation.
“We cannot progress and unleash the prosperity our people so dearly need without industrialisation and we cannot industrialise without building these integrated bauxite and iron ore industries.”
The Minister stuck to the Government’s promise of not harming the forest while excavation for bauxite would go on around the area.
He added that the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, also has plans to transform Ghana into a fully-functional, self-sustainable metal industry chain in order to be able to indigenously process raw materials for manufacturing utility items.
“Government is therefore making efforts to ensure that refineries in Ghana acquire the London Bullion Market association Certification (LBMA) and become fit for purpose to participate in the global refinery industry,” concluded Minister Jinapor.
