International investor interest in Ghana’s bauxite industry has intensified, with Coal India becoming the latest overseas company to evaluate opportunities in the country as it seeks to diversify beyond coal and secure mineral assets abroad.

The Indian state-controlled miner’s interest remains at an early evaluation stage. No specific Ghanaian mine, deposit or company has been identified, and there is no indication that formal negotiations with the Ghanaian authorities have begun.

Coal India’s Ghana interest forms part of a broader international expansion strategy focused on minerals including bauxite, lithium, iron ore, rare earths and other critical minerals. The company is also working towards establishing its first overseas trading office in Singapore, which could serve as a base for mineral trading and potential acquisitions.

Ghana holds about 920 million tonnes of bauxite

Ghana is estimated to have around 920 million tonnes of bauxite resources, with major deposits located at Awaso, Nyinahin and Kyebi.

However, the country currently has no operating alumina refinery, meaning locally mined bauxite is exported in raw form while Ghana’s aluminium industry relies on imported alumina for smelting.

The Awaso mine currently produces about one million tonnes of bauxite annually. The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) is targeting an increase in production to five million tonnes per annum (MTPA), alongside plans for an alumina refinery with a capacity of approximately 1.6 MTPA.

GIADEC is also working with Ghanaian mining company Rocksure International on a proposed mine and refinery at Nyinahin-Mpasaaso. A separate project involving Metlen Energy & Metals could eventually produce up to 10 MTPA of bauxite and include another alumina refinery.

Foreign companies assess opportunities

Coal India’s interest comes amid a wider flow of international proposals targeting Ghana’s emerging bauxite-to-aluminium value chain.

UAE-based Metalloïd Resources Investment has formalised a USD 60 million facility agreement with GIADEC and the Ghana Integrated Bauxite Development Limited Company (GIBDLC). The funding is intended to support the expansion of extraction at the Nyinahin bauxite concession in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.

Meanwhile, Italian engineering company Danieli & C. Officine Meccaniche signed a €300 million memorandum of understanding with GIADEC in mid-2026. The agreement covers plans for an aluminium foil rolling plant at the Tema Integrated Industrial Park, with targeted annual production of up to 45,000 tonnes.

Ghana has also entered negotiations with Dubai-based Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) and selected Chinese companies over the development of bauxite deposits. In addition, geological surveys and mineral exploration were identified as areas for renewed bilateral investment between Ghana and Russia during diplomatic engagements in Moscow in August.

Talks are also underway with Jamaica Bauxite Mining (JBM) over a proposed USD 60 million arrangement under which Jamaican bauxite would be shipped to the Atlantic Alumina plant in Louisiana for refining before the resulting alumina is exported to Ghana for use by the country’s domestic smelting industry.

Push towards an integrated aluminium value chain

The growing investor interest comes as Ghana seeks to move beyond raw bauxite exports and develop a more integrated domestic aluminium industry.

GIADEC is central to this strategy, with plans covering new bauxite mines, alumina refineries and expanded aluminium production. The government is also moving towards policies aimed at limiting raw bauxite exports and encouraging greater domestic value addition.

Ghana Bauxite Company Ltd, which operates the Awaso mine, is progressing with plans for an integrated alumina refinery. The company has commissioned a pre-feasibility study for the proposed facility and secured a site at Awaso.

Rocksure International remains involved in GIADEC’s development plans for Nyinahin-Mpasaaso, providing a pathway for greater participation by Ghanaian private-sector companies in the bauxite and aluminium value chain.

At the downstream end, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has established a negotiating team to oversee the expansion and retooling of the state-owned Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) smelter.

Infrastructure remains critical

GIADEC is negotiating an estimated USD 6 billion infrastructure programme to support the development of Ghana’s integrated aluminium industry.

Two major requirements are rail infrastructure and power supply. The proposed development of the Western Rail Line would provide a heavy-haul route connecting bauxite-producing areas, including Awaso and Nyinahin, with the Takoradi Port.

Power is another key requirement because alumina refining and aluminium smelting are highly energy-intensive. GIADEC’s plans call for at least 500 MW of dedicated power during the initial phase of the integrated industry, with independent power producer models and large-scale renewable energy options being evaluated.

With international companies increasingly assessing Ghana’s mineral resources, the country’s challenge will be to convert investor interest into projects that support its broader ambition of building a domestic bauxite-to-aluminium value chain rather than remaining primarily an exporter of raw ore.
