
Preliminary estimates from the Aluminum Association indicate that aluminium demand in the United States and Canada that includes shipments by domestic producers plus imports stood at an estimated 2,242 million pounds in January 2017, up 5.3% over January 2016. Demand for semi-fabricated (mill) products stood at 1,548 million pounds, up 6.0%.

Apparent consumption which includes demand minus exports in domestic markets stood at an estimated 1,990 million pounds, up 5.3% YOY. Exports of aluminium ingot and mill products from the U.S. and Canada (excluding cross-border trade) stood at 252 million pounds in January, up 5.0% over last year, while imports were up 44.5% to 790 million pounds.

Demand for aluminium semi-fabricated (mill) products in the United States and Canada (domestic producer shipments plus imports stood at an estimated 1,548 million pounds in January, up 6% over January 2016. Apparent consumption in North American markets stood at 1,991 million pounds in January, up 5.3 over January 2016. In 2016, apparent consumption totalled an estimated 23,125 million pounds, up 1.2% over the 2015 total of 22,858 million pounds.

The Association’s “Index of Net New Orders of Aluminum Mill Products” like FRP and extruded products for February dropped 6.1% from the previous month. On average, orders recorded by domestic producers through February 2017 were up 3.0% over last year.
Producer inventories stood at 2,885 million pounds in January, down 6.1% from the December 2016 level of 3,075 million pounds. Compared to a year ago, producer inventories were down 2.6 %.
