
Preliminary estimates from the Aluminum Association indicate that aluminium demand in the United States and Canada (shipments by domestic producers plus imports) totalled an estimated 6.4 million tonnes during the first six months of 2019, a slight increase from YTD 2018. Demand for semi-fabricated (mill) products totalled 4.7 million tonnes, up 2.2 per cent from the same period of 2018.

Demand for aluminium semi-fabricated (mill) products in the United States and Canada (measured in shipments by domestic producers plus imports) was up 1% YoY to an estimated 770,653 tonnes in June. Shipments of aluminium sheet and plate increased 6% YoY to 439,077 tonnes. Extruded product shipments declined 7.5 per cent YoY to 217,724 tonnes. Estimated shipments of aluminium ingot for castings, exports and other uses increased 7.5% to 252,197 tonnes in June.
Apparent consumption (demand less exports) in domestic markets totalled an estimated 5.7 million tonnes in the first six months of 2019, up 2.2 per cent from YTD 2018. Apparent consumption in domestic U.S. and Canadian markets increased 1.8 per cent YoY to 924,875 tonnes in June. Producer inventories totalled 1.6 million tonnes in June, a slight decline from May 2019 and up 10.4 per cent YoY.
Exports of aluminium ingot and mill products from the U.S. and Canada (excluding cross-border trade) totalled 682,656 tonnes through the first half of 2019, off 10.1 per cent for YTD 2018. Imports increased slightly to 2 million tonnes in the same period.
