Noranda Bauxite workers restive

The more than 200 workers represented by the University and Allied Workers Union (UAWU), are upset at a decision of the management to make changes to the company’s incentive scheme.
UWAU 3rd Vice President, Garfield Harvey, explained that each year the company pays out a bonus to workers based on a certain set of targets.
Harvey further said the funds which are set aside are usually distributed equally among the workers.
However, according to him, the company has decided to pay the bonus based on the annual pay of workers.
He said the union believes this is unfair and unjust to some workers who will receive less money as a result of the change to the incentive scheme.
The UWAU 3rd Vice President said the worker’s are growing impatient and the union cannot guarantee normalcy.
He said despite meetings the union and Noranda Bauxite have not been able to reach an agreement.
UAWU is seeking the intervention of the Labour Ministry.
