Nespresso and Amcor win Alufoil Trophy for ASI aluminium coffee capsule

For manufacturing ASI aluminium coffee capsule, the Swiss brand Nespresso and Australian packaging company Amcor have reportedly received the Alufoil Trophy in the Resource Efficiency Category from the European Aluminium Foil Association.

The award recognised the Nespresso’s and Amcor’s efforts towards the improvement of the sustainability of the product by using ASI-certified aluminium, meaning using the metal that is produced and sourced from mined or recycled source and through each step in the value chain as per ASI’s standards.

On winning the award, Gerald Rebitzer, Sustainability Director for Amcor Flexibles, said: “Certification from ASI helps us to deliver more responsible packaging solutions for our customers. Amcor is proud to win this award with our valued partner Nespresso, as we work together towards a responsible, ethical, transparent and more sustainable aluminium supply chain.”

Five production sites of Amcor hold ASI Standards certification. Amcor has a responsible sourcing programme that addresses practices along the full aluminium chain – from upstream production to downstream use sectors. Nespresso is also an active ASI member and uses responsibly sourced aluminium for its capsule production, meeting consumers’ increasing sustainability expectations.

EAFA’s judging panel of industry experts from the aluminium sector said, “This is a holistic entry which does the whole industry credit. It helps to create a standard in the market to which we can all aspire. Amcor and its partners are pioneering responsible sourcing of aluminium foil. The initiative creates a chain of custody as the whole process needs to be certified.”
