NEPA to take action against Windalco
The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA), says it is moving to take action against bauxite mining company Windalco, over this week’s fish kill in the Rio Cobre in St. Catherine.

NEPA said it is preparing to issue an Enforcement Order on Windalco to compel it to cease the discharge of trade effluent into the river.

It also wants Windalco to remedy the situation.

The agency said 62,500 gallons of effluent from Windalco was released into the Pleasant Farm Gully on July 15, which resulted in the Rio Cobre being polluted and causing the fish kill.

NEPA said it has notified the National Irrigation Commission and the National Water Commission, which have since shut down their facilities in the area, to prevent them from becoming contaminated.

NEPA said it is continuing its investigations and will provide further updates.
