On Monday, October 31, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves announced that a special legislative session would be organised on Wednesday to discuss the much-awaited incentive plan for the $2.5 billion aluminium factory in Lowndes County.
He stated that the project is anticipated to generate over 1,000 employment opportunities with an average yearly income of $93,000 and is considered one of Mississippi's most significant economic development pacts. Lowndes County is a county located in the south-central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia.
The economic development agreement includes a flat-rolled aluminium production plant, biocarbon production facilities, and a few other industrial facilities. Projects to upgrade the infrastructure will also be included. The Golden Triangle Region will be home to the facilities. According to the sources, the mill will create metal alloy products for sectors like beverage packaging, automotive, and other industries that use common alloys and are expected to be operational by the first half quarter of 2025.
"Mississippi's economy is firing on all cylinders and this game-changing investment is bringing a thousand high-paying jobs to our state. One of my top priorities will always be to raise the per capita wages of Mississippians. This historic economic development deal does exactly that and will have a remarkable impact on communities across Mississippi," said Reeves.
CEO Joe Max Higgins, COO Meryl Fisackerly, and Vice President of Economic Development Betsy Young, all officials of the Golden Triangle Development LINK, will be at the meeting on Wednesday.
However, the economic development group of the area, the Golden Triangle Development LINK, has declined to comment on the proposal before the special parliamentary session to be held on Wednesday. The LINK, which provides service to three counties, has contributed to establishing more than 8,000 jobs and more than $7 billion in investment for the area.
"We have intentionally grown with our customer's needs, providing efficient, sustainable supply-chain solutions for the highest quality products. Thus far, this has primarily been achieved within the carbon steel industry – however, a significant number of our carbon flat-rolled steel customers are also consumers and processors of aluminum flat-rolled products," said SDI Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer Mark. D. Millett.
