

President Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico is seeking an early agreement with the United States on aluminium, steel and automobiles ahead of the review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Speaking at a press conference, Sheinbaum said these sectors are important for Mexico’s economy. She further added, "We hope that a preliminary agreement can be reached" before the formal review process is completed. The comments came as Jamieson Greer, US Trade Representative, visited Mexico for trade discussions.
Mexico is a major exporter of vehicles, auto parts, and machinery, with most shipments going to the United States. The upcoming USMCA review is significant for Mexico, as many of its exports have so far avoided higher US tariffs under the agreement.

However, the United States warned it may set stricter rules of origin. The rules are aimed at keeping certain products, especially those linked to China, from slipping into the market through Mexico to avoid tariffs.

At the same time, the talks show how policymakers are trying to strike a balance: protecting domestic industries without disrupting the deeply connected supply chains across North America.
