Metro Mining sets another record in Bauxite Shipment; what’s driving the surge?

EDITED BY : 3MINS READ

Metro Mining has just hit a significant milestone at its Bauxite Hills Operations in Queensland, reporting record shipments of 2.3 million wet tonnes for the third quarter, bringing the year-to-date total to an impressive 4.1 million wet tonnes.

Metro Mining sets another record in Bauxite Shipment; what’s driving the surge?

{alcircleadd}

In September 2025, Metro Mining reported that it shipped 779,000 wet tonnes from its Bauxite Hills Operations, representing a solid 3.5 per cent increase compared to the 753,101 wet tonnes shipped in August. The company achieved a remarkable daily shipment record of 38,952 wet tonnes. It has also set impressive three-day and seven-day averages of 33,498 and 31,395 wet tonnes, respectively.

Additionally, the firm has recently scheduled a 36-hour shutdown of OFT Ikamba to enhance the materials handling chutes. However, the availability of dozers has had a temporary impact on mine production. As for the fourth-quarter pricing outcomes, those are currently being finalised and will be updated in the following quarterly review.

Shipment in Q2 2025

The company announced an impressive 19 per cent year-on-year jump in bauxite shipments for Q2 FY2025, reaching a total of 1.2 million wet tonnes. This remarkable achievement was supported by a 41 per cent increase in Free on Board (FOB) net unit revenue, now at USD 72 per tonne. Even with the challenges brought on by tropical storms that impacted barge operations in May and June, the company successfully maintained an annualised production rate of 7 million tonnes, highlighting the strength and resilience of its Bauxite Hills operations in Queensland.

Reason behind the surge

The recent spike in shipments can be linked to a few key strategies. For one, the introduction of the offshore floating terminal, Ikamba, has played a crucial role in reducing production downtime after bad weather. On the other hand, the new conveyor systems have really boosted operational efficiency, allowing Metro Mining to ramp up its production capacity to 8 million tonnes each year. With these infrastructure improvements, along with solid reserves and lower operating costs, the company is well-positioned to hit its 2025 shipment goal of 6.5 to 7 million WMT.

The firm’s Bauxite Hills Operations is thriving, achieving record shipments both quarterly and year-to-date. These successes are attributed to smart infrastructure upgrades, like the new Ikamba offshore terminal and improved conveyor systems. With strong reserves and efficient operations, the company is well on track to hit its ambitious 2025 shipment goal of 6.5 to 7 million tonnes, solidifying its position as a leader in Queensland’s bauxite industry.
