Malaysian bauxite turning into a “game changer” for China

1MINS READ
The Indonesian ban and China’s ramped up production has put the Malaysian bauxite industry in the limelight and is being termed as “game changer” in the aluminium industry in general but more specifically in China.

It is expected that China would need around 130 million tonnes of bauxite next year and 36.8 million of that amount needs to be imported to feed the voracious aluminium industry in China.

The first nine months of the year has already seen a jump in Malaysian bauxite imports in China by 12 times, from 105,000 tonnes in 2013 to 1.27 million tonnes in 2014 and analysts predict that number could go up to 10 million tonnes next year.

In a bid to keep up with demands, Malaysia is also ramping up its mining activities. Idea Mineral Resources opened a mine few months back which is producing 4000 tonnes a day at the moment but is looking to raise output to 10,000 tonnes by the first quarter next year.

China’s aluminium production, although slow by it own standards, is likely to rise from 28 million of this year to 30.65 million tonnes next year, according to CRU figures.
