
The US dollar closed at 97.56, a 16-month high against a basket of currencies as investors built bets on an increase in interest rates next month. Brexit deal concerns and a growing rift in Europe over Italy's budget also buoyed the dollar. Amid fresh uncertainty over Brexit deal, the pound slipped under $1.29 during overnight Asian trading and extended its decline later as London opened 1% lower on the day.
LME aluminium dipped to another new low as it closed Monday’s trading at US$1934 per tonne. During night trading, it dropped to a low of US$1,937 per tonne after it failed to test resistance above twice overnight. Pressured by a stronger US dollar, it is expected to trade at US$1,920-1,950 per tonne today.

As on November 12, Monday, LME aluminium cash (bid) price stood at US$ 1933 per tonne, LME official settlement price stands at US$ 1934 per tonne; 3-months bid price stands at US$ 1942 per tonne, 3-months offer price is US$ 1942.50 per tonne; Dec 19 bid price stands at US$ 2005 per tonne, and Dec 19 offer price stands at US$ 2010 per tonne.
The LME aluminium opening stock rose to 1056450 tonnes. Live Warrants totalled at 745750 tonnes, and Cancelled Warrants were 310700 tonnes.
LME aluminium 3-months Asian Reference Price is hovering at US$ 1956.43 per tonne.
SME and SHFE Aluminium Price Trend
The benchmark aluminium price on Shanghai Metal Exchange dropped to US$ 1973 per tonne today from US$ 1986 per tonne on November 12.
Short-covering boosted the SHFE 1901 contract to an intraday high of RMB 13,920 per tonne from an intraday low of RMB 13,820 per tonne yesterday. Open interest for the contract shrank by over 1,500 lots in 30 minutes. The contract then came off from the intraday high to close at RMB 13,860 per tonne on Monday, lower than at closing on Friday. The SHFE 1901 contract then dropped to a low of RMB 13,735 per tonne at night right after opening. Limited upward momentum kept the contract around RMB 13,770 per tonne and closed at RMB 13,765 per tonne. It is unlikely to rebound significantly today and will trade at RMB 13,700-13,840 per tonne, with spot discounts down to RMB 40 per tonne.
