Government approves Tomago cable factory
A $30 million Tomago cable factory has won state government approval.

The NSW Planning decision paves the way for Bahrain-based Midal Cables to forge ahead with a new plant on the eastern edge of the existing Tomago Aluminium site.

The new project could be a substantial boost for the region’s aluminium sector, which has suffered significant job losses already this year.

When operational, the Midal plant will allow the cables to be made from hot metal direct from the smelter.

The proximity to Tomago Aluminium will also remove the need to cool or cast the resource before it is recast into products.

The Newcastle Herald reported last year that about 50,000 tonnes or a tenth of Tomago Aluminium’s output could be made into rods and conductors under Midal’s full capacity.
