Global bauxite flows climb 3% in July as Guinea shipments surge ahead of potential export curbs

Global bauxite flows rose to 20 million tonnes in July 2026, up more than 3 per cent year on year, as a sharp increase in shipments to China offset declines across almost every other region. However, the strength in July may not fully carry into the coming months, with Guinea’s expected export restrictions prompting buyers to bring purchases forward.

Bauxite flows destined for China increased by 5 per cent in July, providing the main support to global volumes. India, despite recording a surge in bauxite imports during 2026, saw shipments destined for the country fall by 2 per cent in July. This was only the second monthly decline recorded so far this year.

Flows to the UAE remained under pressure as the conflict in the Arabian Gulf region continued to affect shipments. July marked the sixth consecutive month in which bauxite flows to the UAE were below the previous year’s level, with volumes falling 81 per cent from July 2025.

Guinea front-loading drives July flows

Guinea was the key source of growth. Bauxite flows from the country surged by more than 12 per cent in July as buyers increased purchases ahead of potential restrictions on exports.

The impact is particularly important for China, where the aluminium chain remains heavily reliant on the grade of bauxite supplied from Guinea. This has given Chinese buyers and processors a stronger incentive to front-load purchases before export restrictions take effect.

The resulting buying pattern raises an important question for the August and September outlook: will Guinea’s July surge continue, or was it largely a result of purchases being brought forward?

If export restrictions are formalised in the coming weeks, Guinea’s July increase could be followed by a sharp pullback in loadings. This could tighten the market at a time when Chinese refiners are particularly dependent on Guinean ore.

If restrictions are delayed or watered down, the incentive for front-loading would weaken and flows could normalise from July’s elevated levels. Either scenario leaves Guinea as the dominant source of near-term market volatility.

China demand remains firm as UAE stays offline

China is expected to remain the market’s reliable demand floor. Alumina refinery capacity continues to expand, while there is no structural reason for Chinese procurement to weaken in the second half of 2026.

India could provide an additional source of demand. Although shipments fell in July, the broader 2026 trend remains strongly positive. A recovery in Indian buying would add incremental volume to an already well-supported market.

The UAE, meanwhile, is expected to remain effectively offline as a destination for the foreseeable future due to the ongoing Arabian Gulf disruption. Other non-Chinese destinations also show little sign of compensating for the lost volumes.

As a result, the bauxite market’s trajectory through August and September will largely depend on two factors: how Guinea’s export policy develops and whether China maintains its appetite at July’s elevated pace.
