Eurostat reports strong growth in aluminium scrap export by the EU

According to preliminary figures released by the EU statistics office Eurostat, exports of non-ferrous scrap metals from the EU in particular aluminium scrap shipments from the EU member states to non-EU countries were on the rise, after a decline in 2017.

According to the Eurostat data, about 941,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap with a total value of €1.07bn were exported by the 28 EU member states in 2016 registering a growth of 10% YOY from 858,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap valued at €1.11bn in 2015. Shipments to China and the special administrative zone Hong Kong increased from a combined 337,000 tonnes in the year 2015 to 393,000 tonnes in 2016. EU also recorded higher level of export to Pakistan at 70,000 tonnes in comparison to previous year’s level of 59,000 tonnes.

The Eurostat data shows a decline in imports of non-ferrous scrap metals into the EU by 11 per cent in 2016. However, the EU’s imports of aluminium scrap increased 13 per cent to 404,000 tonnes with a value realization of €471m.

The data shows an export surplus of about 572,000 tonnes in the EU's net foreign trade balance for aluminium scrap in 2016 from 541,000 tonnes in 2015.
