Emirates Environmental Group in can collection campaign
In its 16th annual collection, EEG is inviting communities, institutions, private sector groups and government bodies to bring their cans for recycling to designated sites.
“The Campaign aims to gather the biggest possible number of aluminium cans for recycling by encouraging the support of the community and thus provide a boost to the local recycling industry and reduce the quantity of waste going to landfills. This campaign is in line with the group’s efforts to protect the environment by promoting awareness, community involvement and action programmes,” said the eco group in a statement on Thursday.
It said a second can collection will be held on November 9 as well.
This year’s goal is to collect a total 25 tonnes of aluminium cans for recycling to divert recyclable waste from going to landfills across the UAE.
Habiba Al Marashi, chairwoman of the group, said the UAE consumes more than 500 million cans of beverages and sends only five per cent of that number to recycling operations.
According to statistics, the global average for recycling aluminium cans in other countries is 63 per cent of all cans consumed.
So far, EEG’s participants in waste management programmes collected more than 106 tonnes in January alone.
Other EEG figures show that 348 participants were able to collect 93,975kg of paper, 40 participants collected 208kg of aluminium cans, 54 participants collected 34,348kg of glass, 163 participants collected 6,939kg of plastic, and 13 participants managed to collect 423kg of beverage container, Tetrapak. Around 26 participants in the toner campaign collected 487 packages, and 10 participants in battery campaign collected 449 kilograms of batteries.
The key to the success so far by EEG is making recycling programmes accessible to the people through campaigns in neighbourhoods and hotels.
