Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has provided an initial assessment of its operations following recent Iranian missile and drone attacks on its Al Taweelah site, one of the world’s largest aluminium production complexes.
{alcircleadd}EGA said the Al Taweelah facility sustained significant damage as a result of the attacks at Khalifa Economic Zone Abu Dhabi. The site, including the smelter and casthouse, power plant, alumina refinery and recycling plant, was fully evacuated, with operations moved into emergency shutdown.
In earlier coverage of the incident, AL Circle noted that the March 28 incident also affected other regional aluminium facilities, including Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), with both companies assessing damage while prioritising employee safety.

To resume operations at the smelter, EGA said infrastructure repairs will be required along with the gradual restoration of reduction cells. Early indications suggest that a full recovery of primary aluminium production could take up to 12 months.
The company added that the alumina refinery and recycling plant may be able to restart parts of production earlier, depending on the outcome of ongoing damage assessments.
AL Circle also highlighted in the earlier coverage that key areas such as power and aluminium handling units at Al Taweelah were among the most affected, contributing to the current halt in operations.
Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of EGA, said the company remains focused on the safety of its workforce, noting that employees come from more than 40 countries. He added that while some individuals were injured, no life-threatening cases were reported and recovery is currently ongoing.

As per the report, six employees of EGA were injured due to the attack.
EGA reported that the Al Taweelah site plays a very significant role in the global aluminium supply, and any further disruption could have wider implications for the downstream sector. The company said it is working with customers whose deliveries may be impacted during this period.
The Al Taweelah smelter produced 1.6 million tonnes of cast metal in 2025, while the alumina refinery recorded output of 2.4 million tonnes, meeting 46 per cent of EGA’s alumina requirements. The recycling plant has an annual production capacity of 185 thousand tonnes.
EGA further observed that it possesses metal stockpiles, both domestically and internationally. This availability could potentially ease the management of supply obligations in the immediate future.
