Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

One industrialist who did some straight speaking at the Global Investors Meet in Karnataka on Thursday was S?R?Jindal, the founder of Jindal Aluminium Limited. While many other investors had bouquets for the government, for creating an ‘investment-friendly’ environment, Jindal, a long time investor in the State, in his address at the inaugural session, said Karnataka was not investor friendly as it claimed to be. He insinuated that the State-level single window clearance committee, which clears mega investment projects under the chairmanship of the chief minister, entailed a complicated process. Suggesting that the government should bring about improvements in the system, Jindal said, “The government claims that the single window clearance system facilitates easy processes. But when an...

Authorities have now confirmed that the Rain CII plant was caught on fire, which is near the Noranda Aluminum Plant in St. James Parish. The Rain CII Plant caught on fire around 7:30 PM Wednesday. The plant is a part of the old Kaiser Aluminum plant in St. James Parish in Gramercy. St. James Parish Sheriff Willy Martin says the lightning from Wednesday's storms may have ignited the fire. The roof, of wood construction, caught on fire, and then collapsed on top of a product stored in the facility known as calcined coke. There are no reported injuries. The fire has been controlled to the confines of the Rain CII plant, and there is no off-site impact. The St. James parish president, Timmy Roussel, said there have been no evacuations and there will be no need for any. The state police hazmat...

The first businesses to benefit from the federal government's $1 billion grants program to help manufacturers cope with the carbon pricing include an insulation maker, an aluminium can plant and a number of wineries. Manufacturers awarded grants of up to $500,000 under the clean technology investment program have to match the government on a dollar-for-dollar basis. Businesses applying for all other grants under $10 million are required to contribute $2 for every $1 from the government. For grants of $10 million or more at least $3 must be contributed for each $1 received. The money must be invested in new equipment and processes that cut carbon emissions. Thirteen grants worth a total $8.1 million were announced on Thursday. They attracted co-investments of $23 million. The grants were a...

An expansion of Aluminum Castings Corporation’s manufacturing operation at its current location at 340 S. Kellogg St. has raised concerns from a city official and residents. As part of a $2 million expansion that will double the amount of workers the manufacturer employs, the company has told city officials of its plan to expand production to its warehouse. Doing so would require the property to be rezoned from light industry, or M-1, site to heavy industry. Aluminum Castings Corporation produces sand mold aluminum castings, which require aluminum to be melted in the plant. Markum said the business has been in the same location since 1964. The city is working with the company to allow such manufacturing in an M-1 zoning site. The city’s planning and zoning commission on May 22 recommended...

Quanex Building Products Corp.'s fiscal second-quarter loss widened on lower sales volumes and higher costs in its key aluminum segment. Quanex sells aluminum sheets and homebuilding products like windows and doors. Like others in the industry, it has remained under pressure amid a languid housing sector, even as costs for raw materials and production rise. Late last year, the company said it was consolidating two manufacturing facilities, and plans to permanently close a plant in Barbourville, Ky., by August. The latest-quarter results were also affected by a January strike involving 240 employees at two facilities in Davenport, Iowa. The union has since ended its strike. For the quarter ended April 30, Quanex reported a loss of $12.3 million, or 34 cents a share, compared with a...

Aluminium manufacturer Alcoa is going through a rough patch as its profitability has taken a beating lately due to falling alumina prices arising from oversupply of the commodity. Alcoa is a major global producer of aluminium and related products and could play a vital role in bringing prices back to previous levels if it continues to cut capacity. In April, it cut nearly 390K tons in smelting capacity and might have to cut more assessing the market, going forward. Capacity cuts In April, Alcoa announced that it would curtail 390K ton of refining capacity in the Atlantic region, which represents almost 50% of its annual global capacity of 18 million ton. [1] This trend of capacity cuts is expected to continue in the near future until the aluminium prices recover. The revival of alumina...

Solar company Nanosolar believes that solar panels don’t have to be heavy slabs. That’s why it developed a way to print solar cells as thin as a sheet of aluminum foil. Nanosolar announced today it has raised $70 million in equity from new and existing investors OnPoint Technologies, Mohr Davidow Ventures, and Ohana Holdings. In the past, the company received investments from Reid Hoffman, Sergey Brin, Larry Page, and Benchmark Capital. Nanosolar prints copper, indium, gallium, selenium and nanoparticle inks on to thin pieces of aluminum foil to create what it claims are the thinnest and cheapest solar panels in the world. Unlike the typical solar panel we’re used to seeing, Nanosolar doesn’t base its design on semiconductors — an approach it feels lowers the cost of production...
