From raw resources to battery-ready materials: Australia's downstream ambitions take shape

Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...

Germany-France aluminium FRP trade 2026 dips to $692m but specialised exchange holds strong

Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

Aluminum Castings' rezoning request decision delayed

The fate of Aluminum Castings’ request to be rezoned to a heavy industrial site will have to wait until July as the council waits on a report from the company regarding its plans to increase production at the existing location. Alderman Peter Schwartzman, Ward 5, had raised concerns during the rezoning ordinance’s first reading over whether an expansion at their facility at 340 S. Kellogg St. would cause harm to local residents and downtown business patrons. He proposed questions to Aluminum Castings President Bret Markum at the council’s June 4 meeting. Because it was only a first reading of the ordinance, Markum was not prepared to respond, so Schwartzman submitted his questions in writing. Among the information Schwartzman is requesting is: emissions reports and information, health...

Novelis’ Take on Aluminum Light-Weighting in Auto Industry

Senior vice president and chief commercial strategist at Novelis, Erwin Mayr always delivers a thought-provoking and well-put-together presentation, and at this year’s Harbor Aluminum Outlook conference, he focused his sights on light-weighting in the auto industry with aluminum — depending on whom you talk to, a boon for the aluminum’s flat rolled products (FRP) market. Obvious to most, the driver — pun, again, intended — behind light-weighting globally is reducing CO2 emissions. Indeed, Mayr supported his case with some light math — with new CAFE standards to take effect in 2025 of 54.5 mpg, that means CO2 must get reduced to just over 100 grams per mile. He took us through the usual-suspect bullet points on which parts of the automobile are subject to and would benefit from aluminum...

An effort to improve fuel efficiency will boost aluminium demand in the auto industry: Alcoa

The global push to improve fuel efficiency in vehicle fleets will more than double the demand for aluminum in the auto market by 2025, Alcoa's director of automotive marketing said Wednesday. Car makers from BMW to Audi have already started to react to the so-called Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards and are beginning to move away from heavier steel body frames to lighter-weight material in what should be the "next frontier" for the aluminum industry, Randall Scheps told delegates at the American Metal Market's Aluminum Summit in New York. "We have every car maker calling us, wanting to increase their aluminum content, wanting to start new R&D (research and development) projects about how they can convert bodies from steel to aluminum, wanting to convert hoods and doors from...

Alderman urges city to help Aluminum Castings relocate within Galesburg

Despite a statement last week by the president of Aluminum Castings saying the company will move to Peoria before relocating in Galesburg, Alderman Peter Schwartzman, Ward 5, said in a news release Monday afternoon the City Council should help the company find a new location in Galesburg and provide financial support for the move. The first reading of a City Council resolution to allow Aluminum Castings to produce heavy industrial work in its building zoned for light industrial was met with opposition by Schwartzman and a number of citizens. Aluminum Castings President Brett Markum said last week the company has invested too heavily in its current building to consider relocating in Galesburg, including a $1 million piece of equipment to modernize the facility. The company has planned a $2...

Aluminium fabrication industry suffers under Land row in Noida

The recent land acquisition trouble gripping Noida Extension has led to a total stoppage of all construction happening in the region. It has not just hurt the real estate companies but a lot of other allied industries here as well. One such industry was aluminium fabrication, which is also one of the hardest hit. In the past decade, there has been a tremendous increase in the usage of aluminium structures in buildings owing to the various advantages that aluminium has over wood or iron. This increase in demand for Noida aluminium fabricators from Noida extension construction, which was one of the fastest developing real estate hubs in NCR, was a big support to the industry here, which was suddenly taken away. "Noida Extension was a big demand generator for us, but for the last six to...

BCCI chief urges Indian downstream manufacturers in aluminium, steel and petrochemicals to invest in Bahrain

Bahrain beckons Indian downstream manufacturers in aluminium, steel and petrochemicals said BCCI chief. “Manufacturing companies from India can look at Bahrain as a base for downstream manufacturing industries in aluminium, steel and petrochemicals. Bahrain’s proximity to the raw material source is a huge benefit for such businesses,” said Dr Esam Fakhro, Chairman of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry in an exclusive interview for the Bahrain News Agency. “It makes great sense to look at Bahrain. The cost of fuel in Bahrain, when compared with India, is 20 per cent less. The proximity of raw material – including steel aluminium and hydrocarbons is more here. It thus makes great sense to companies looking to venture out of the country to setting up base here. It is important to...
