From raw resources to battery-ready materials: Australia's downstream ambitions take shape

Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...

Germany-France aluminium FRP trade 2026 dips to $692m but specialised exchange holds strong

Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

KAP Minerals and Cymat sign MoU to develop Canadian scandium-aluminium alloy supply chain

KAP Minerals and Cymat Technologies are exploring a partnership to produce scandium-aluminium master alloy in Ontario, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding. The partnership would use scandium oxide from KAP’s Kapuskasing critical minerals project and Cymat’s aluminium-processing technology to produce alloys for aerospace, defence and manufacturing applications. To know the global production, demand and consumption forecasts of aluminium extrusions, explore our report " The World of Aluminium Extrusions to 2035 " Scandium-aluminium alloys can improve strength, performance and weldability while reducing weight. The companies aim to use the proposed venture to establish a domestic supply chain, converting Canadian critical minerals into value-added industrial materials....

BMW to use the latest high performance aluminium pistons by Federal-Mogul

Federal-Mogul Corporation (NASDAQ: FDML) has developed an aluminium piston that meets the higher strength and thermal performance demands of very high-power diesel engines. BMW is the first to use the piston in its triple-turbo 3.0-litre diesel (N57D30S1) engine, which with a specific power output of 93kW/litre (124bhp/litre) is the world's most powerful light diesel. Premium vehicle manufacturers are introducing higher power diesel engines that improve dynamic performance, CO2 emissions and fuel economy, but power outputs of more than 90kW/litre have long challenged piston designs. "Increasing the specific power output produces higher mechanical loads and temperatures, making a piston's heat dissipation as important as its strength," said Gian Maria Olivetti, Federal-Mogul's vice...

Hulamin gains 1,8% after reparing its hot finishing mill

Aluminum product manufacturer Hulamin gained 1,8% to R5,60 yesterday after saying its Camps Drift hot finishing mill has been repaired and recommissioned, 46 days after a failure in its main 68-ton motor. It said production of thicker gauge plate and production from the mill’s twin roll casters continued during the outage, with production losses limited to about 25000 tons. But it could not divulge what lost production might cost until the insurance claim was settled, nor whether this would materially affect group results. "All our products were affected — for example, can end stock, foil, automotive brazing sheet, thinner gauge plate and sheet and coil — except the thick gauge plate and certain alloy standard sheet and coil products," CEO Richard Jacob said yesterday. He said, to varying...

Alcoa unveils plans for new high school

After seven years of planning, Alcoa City Schools unveiled plans for their new high school. The new building would nearly double student capacity. The existing building, parts of which were built in 1939, is suitable for 600 students, according to Director of Schools Dr. Brian Bell. He says the new 180,000 square foot facility would accommodate 1,000 students. Currently he says they're on track to exceed capacity of the current facility off Faraday Street in the next two to three years. But first, voters must approve a half-cent sales tax increase to fund the three phase, $30 million project. The plans feature a sprawling lawn leading up to an aluminum dome and columned entry way. Bell says it was a conscious effort to pay tribute the former aluminum company in Alcoa that donated the...

Aluminum Castings emmisions are not hazardous and well within limit: reports

Whether an odor is given off by production at Aluminum Castings or not, one thing seems clear from information provided by the Illinois and U.S. Environmental Protection agencies: The company produces minimal pollution that is unlikely to be hazardous to anyone’s health. The issue surfaced June 4 during the first reading of a City Council resolution to allow the sand mold foundry to produce heavy industrial work in its building zoned for light industrial. The company has plans for a $2 million expansion that will double its workforce from 30 to 60. Alderman Peter Schwartzman, Ward 5, opposed the resolution because of concerns increased emissions would be harmful to children at the nearby YMCA Kid Station, as well as to people downtown. “The release of unknown chemical effluents and the...
