More Aluminum Content in Forthcoming Auto Models for fuel efficiency
Automaker giants such as BMW and Audi began plans for tougher Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards. They have decided to move away from existing heavier steel body frames and opt for aluminum to be used in vehicles. Carmakers are basically reacting to increases in fuel economy requirements and regulations. Every major market around the world is tightening fuel standards,” said Randall Scheps at the American Metal Market’s Aluminum Summit in New York.
Scheps added that automakers are calling them to increase their aluminum content and also want to start new R&D projects on changing steel bodies to aluminum especially hoods and doors. “It’s an unprecedented time in the aluminum industry, and car bodies are the next frontier,” Scheps added. Besides, BMW — the German automaker has already started using metal bodies in their cars in recent years. Scheps estimated that by 2025, the amount of aluminum in an average car will grow from the current 343 lbs to 550 lbs. For this, Alcoa has spent $300 million in development projects at its Davenport, Iowa rolled products plant.
“That’s the next phase of capacity to serve the automotive market, and the forecasts we are looking at now shows that this phase will be full by 2015,” Scheps said. Barack Obama also has proposed to increase increasing the U.S. CAFE standard from a target of 35.5 miles per gallon in 2016 to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025.
