From raw resources to battery-ready materials: Australia's downstream ambitions take shape

Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...

Germany-France aluminium FRP trade 2026 dips to $692m but specialised exchange holds strong

Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

AMD 350 patrol boat insipires Chinese fast-attack missile boat

It looked like a textbook win-win deal when Australian high-speed ferry designer AMD Marine Consulting formed a joint venture in 1993 with the engineering arm of a state-owned Chinese shipbuilder. The joint venture partner, Guangzhou Marine Engineering Corporation, a subsidiary of the giant China State Shipbuilding Corporation, gained access to state-of-the-art technology in wave-piercing, aluminium-hull designs. For AMD, a Sydney-based private company, the payoff was a foothold in China's maritime market during a period of rapid growth. The joint venture, Seabus International Co, began designing high-speed aluminium catamaran ferries and sea rescue vessels for China's inland and coastal waters, according to the company's website. That's when a third winner emerged. Attracted to the...

Japan aluminum alloy trade quietens ahead of Toyota buy tender result

Trading of imported ADC12 aluminum alloy in Japan has calmed down ahead of the closing of Toyota Motor's third-quarter buy tender on Friday as market participants waited for the results, sources said Tuesday. Two traders said deals were done at around $2,240/mt CFR Japan for several hundred tons of Chinese-origin material to be shipped to Japan in July-August. The material was to be sold to diecasters and not for building up stock, they added. Tender-related buying activity was not seen as most market participants were expecting Toyota's award levels to fall from the current quarter. Two market participants said the London Metal Exchange high grade aluminum prices have weakened, triggering local aluminum scrap prices to fall. As a result, they were seeing a 3-6% drop in local ADC12 ally...

iPhone 5 to have aluminium back cover

A photo that sources claims to be of the back of the new iPhone - possibly the iPhone 5 - has emerged on the internet and it’s apparently made of aluminium. Though it's difficult to gauge an idea of screen size, for example, it's gone into detail as to what we might be able to expect from the new iPhone based on the cover. For example, the docking port at the bottom of the cover is far smaller and thinner than previous models. This in turn looks as though it has created more estate for bigger and therefore more-enhanced speakers. The other key feature is that the back plate is made from one solid piece of aluminium alloy. Judging by the leaked picture, this has given the new iPhone a charcoal shade.

Japan’s shipments of rolled-aluminum products Expand for Third Month

Japan’s shipments of rolled-aluminum products expanded 1.4 percent in April, the third straight month of increase, as demand from automakers surged. Supplies to domestic and export markets increased to 166,048 metric tons last month from 163,805 tons a year earlier, the Japan Aluminium Association said today. The pace of increase slowed from 1.7 percent in March. “Shipments to the auto industry jumped as the government revived subsidy payments to buyers of fuel-efficient models, boosting car sales,” Takeki Murayama, secretary general of the association, said today in Tokyo. Sales to carmakers soared 48 percent to 23,519 tons, offsetting declines in shipments to makers of cans and electronics devices, according to the association.

Novelis may emerge profitable for Hindalco

Aditya Birla group’s Hindalco Industries, which posted lacklustre March quarter results, may find a saviour in Novelis – the US firm it bought in 2007 for $6billion. Novelis, now its US subsidiary, is expected to report stable or even better-than-expected results on Thursday as it is largely independent of volatility in aluminium prices due to its focus on value-added products, analysts said. “Novelis is focusing on a custom-smelting business, which is relatively stable and is largely independent of volatility in aluminium prices because of which the company is expected to report stable performance,” said Deepak Poddar, an analyst at Daiwa Capital Markets, in a May 4 report on Hindalco titled `Novelis exposure moderates volatility risk’. Further the expansion plan of the company is also...
