Rain CII Plant in St. James Parish has caught fire
The Rain CII Plant caught on fire around 7:30 PM Wednesday. The plant is a part of the old Kaiser Aluminum plant in St. James Parish in Gramercy.
St. James Parish Sheriff Willy Martin says the lightning from Wednesday's storms may have ignited the fire. The roof, of wood construction, caught on fire, and then collapsed on top of a product stored in the facility known as calcined coke.
There are no reported injuries. The fire has been controlled to the confines of the Rain CII plant, and there is no off-site impact.
The St. James parish president, Timmy Roussel, said there have been no evacuations and there will be no need for any. The state police hazmat team said the product burning is not hazardous.
Highway 44 in Gramercy near the plant is shut down and will remain closed till the fire is out.
Martin says the fire could get up to temperatures of 1200 degrees
