Costa Cruises achieved significant recycling and sustainability benchmarks in 2016

<p>According to the newly released 2016 sustainability report, Costa Cruises, an Italian cruise line, based in Genoa, Italy reduced waste by 9.5% per passenger day and cut its carbon footprint by 5% from 2015 to 2016. Fuel consumption per passenger also dropped 3%.</p> <p>The report says Costa Cruise sorted 100% of waste on board and reported the collection of about 393 tons of aluminium over the last 10 years, which were later sent for recycling.</p> <p style="text-align: center;"><img style="vertical-align: middle;" src="http://www.alcircle.com/uploads/images/costa-pacifica.jpg" alt="News" width="517" height="226" /></p> <p>'The roadmap we created three years ago places sustainability at the center of an integrated and multi-stakeholder approach,' said Stefania Lallai, sustainability and external relations director, Costa Cruises. This, according to her, led to a series of successful conservation and recycling projects on board.</p> <p>Costa also has been working towards waste reduction and promoting recycling and the recovery of materials from end-of-life products. It was their collaboration with CiAL (the Aluminium Packaging Consortium) which helped the successful recycling of 393 tons of aluminium so far.</p> <p>{googleAdsense}</p> <p>They have also actively promoted the 'Message in a Can' project, which increased the collection of aluminium in the Municipality of Savona by 27%.</p> <p>A study carried out by PwC in Savona, Costa's main homeport, revealed that the company's economic contribution to the city's GDP stood at &euro;38m per year. The company also created 681 jobs in the city.&nbsp;</p>
