Traditionally prized for their lightweight properties, high strength, and corrosion resistance, aluminium alloys have long been the cornerstone of aerospace construction. However, their limited heat resistance, particularly within the critical temperature bracket of 350 to 500 degrees Celsius, has posed significant obstacles to further advancement.

Elevating thermal resistance

Led by He Chunnian from Tianjin University, a team of researchers embarked on a quest to enhance the thermal capabilities of aluminium alloys. Their pioneering approach involved embedding highly dispersive nanoparticles into the alloy matrix, facilitating the growth of in-situ graphene-like coatings. This ingenious process led to a remarkable reduction in surface energy, culminating in exceptional thermal performance.

The resultant aluminium alloys exhibit extraordinary properties, defying conventional limitations. These alloys demonstrate exceptional creep resistance, accompanied by an impressive tensile strength of approximately 200 megapascals, enduring temperatures of up to 500 degrees Celsius. This represents a monumental leap forward, with the alloys showcasing six times the strength of ordinary counterparts under similar conditions.

A triumph of simplicity and scalability

What sets this innovation apart is its simplicity, minimal material costs, and scalability. This not only underlines its industrial viability but also positions it as a transformative force in various applications beyond aerospace engineering.
