Chinalco has increased its stake in Aluminum Corporation of China Limited, known as Chalco, after purchasing shares worth CNY 659 million (USD 97.7 million).
{alcircleadd}According to a Hong Kong filing dated August 11, 2026, Chinalco and parties acting in concert acquired 77.4 million Chalco shares, comprising 47.6 million A-shares and 29.8 million H-shares.
Following the purchase, Chinalco and its affiliated parties held approximately 5.83 billion shares, representing 34.01 per cent of Chalco’s total issued share capital.
This acquisition strengthens Chinalco’s position as the controlling shareholder of Chalco, one of China’s major producers of bauxite, alumina and aluminium.
The transaction included shares listed on both the Shanghai and Hong Kong stock exchanges. The A-share purchase accounted for 47.6 million shares, while the H-share acquisition comprised 29.8 million shares.
The filing did not indicate any immediate change to Chalco’s production plans or operations. However, the increased holding gives Chinalco greater influence over the listed aluminium producer and its future strategic direction.

Purchase follows wider stake-building plan
The transaction follows a July 2026 announcement in which Chinalco and parties acting in concert proposed purchasing between CNY 1 billion (USD 148.23 million) and CNY 2 billion (USD 296.5 million) of additional Chalco A- and H-shares over a period of up to 12 months.
The proposed purchases were capped at 2 per cent of Chalco’s total share capital. At the time of the announcement, Chinalco directly owned approximately 30.5 per cent of Chalco, while its direct and indirect holdings gave it control of roughly 33.6 per cent of the company’s share capital.
The latest CNY 659 million purchase appears to form part of that broader stake-increase programme. It further consolidates Chinalco’s influence over Chalco as China’s aluminium industry responds to changing demand, raw-material requirements and market conditions.
