Aluminum Association promotes aluminium in automotive sector

The Aluminum Association is touting the intensive use of its metal for the many benefits it offers consumers and the environment.

According to the association’s Aluminum Transportation Group, aluminum use is at all-time-high and currently stands as the number two material used to make today’s vehicles. According to auto manufacturers, that is expected to double by 2025.

The high-strength, low weight metal helps vehicles be economical, durable, high performing and safe, translating into benefits such as fewer emissions, reduced usage of fuel or other energy sources used for propulsion (which, in turn saves consumers money at the pumps), and improved performance (acceleration, braking, handling, etc.)

Among the marques whose vehicles are aluminum intensive, are Audi and Land Rover, to name just two. A range of passenger cars on the road today contain more than 500 pounds of aluminum.

The association further claims that aluminum has the lowest overall carbon footprint and is infinitely recyclable. According to the Canadian government and Magnesium industry, aluminum is best when examining the full lifecycle to include tailpipe savings (claimed to be 20% better than steel).

Aluminum is also known for its crash absorbency, and can be designed to deflect crash energies away from vehicle occupants by folding predictably during a crash. Aluminum absorbs – pound for pound – two times the energy in a crash compared to steel.

It’s also cost-effective, helping to drive down costs through such processes as downsizing engines, consolidating parts consolidation and fewer EV batteries, according to the Aluminum Association.
