According to the preliminary estimates from Aluminum Association, aluminium demand in the United States and Canada, including shipments by domestic producers plus imports stood at an estimated 2.1 million tonnes for January and February 2019, slightly down from the same period of 2018. Demand for semi-fabricated (mill) products stood at 1.5 million tonnes, up 1.1 percent. Apparent consumption (demand less exports) in domestic markets totalled an estimated 1.8 million tonnes, slightly up YoY.

Imports of aluminium ingot, scrap and mill products into the U.S. and Canada (excluding cross-border trade) stood at 297,103 tonnes in February 2019, off 17.8 per cent from the February 2018 total of 361,513 tonnes. Including aluminium scrap, which accounted for roughly 61.2 percent of reported aluminium exports in February, exports totalled 263,537 tonnes, up 3.4 percent over a year ago. Excluding scrap, exports totalled 102,512 tonnes, off 20 per cent from last year. Exports of scrap increased 26.9 percent YoY.
Through the first two months of 2019, imports were down 9.7 percent to 679,934 tonnes, while exports were up 6.9 percent to 524,352 tonnes. The boost in aluminium export and drop in import was a trend which started after Trump imposed the 10% tariffs on aluminium and it is continuing in the first two months of 2019.
