The parliamentary breakfast briefing held by ALFED was a great success, with representatives from the entire aluminium supply chain coming together to discuss the ever-changing industrial terrain. Hosted by the Rt Hon. Lord Redesdale, the event provided a valuable opportunity to explore future opportunities for the domestic market and navigate existing trade challenges.

Steve Andrews from ISSB Ltd. presented the latest sector data, while Mike Dines, president of ALFED, highlighted the proactive decisions of the aluminium industry and its role in shaping the UK's future economic wellbeing.
During the event, Dines discussed the benefits of balancing the import and export of finished materials and harnessing scrap to reduce carbon emissions. He also highlighted the opportunity for the industry to create green jobs and accelerate net-zero aspirations by promoting an infinitely circular economy.
Roger Ablett, managing director of Norsk Hydro UK, addressed the legislative challenges facing the sector, including the ongoing anti-dumping challenge and the considerations surrounding the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). He also raised concerns about the effectiveness of sanctions on the import of Russian aluminium. Overall, the event provided a platform for constructive discussion and collaboration within the industry.
Tom Jones, chief executive officer of the Aluminium Federation, candidly talking about the event, remarked: "Our annual September breakfast briefing is a significant event in the industry calendar. As the aluminium sector plays such a pivotal role in the UK's economic wellbeing, we relish the opportunity to raise key issues with the top levels of the UK government and discuss how best to leverage the numerous opportunities in front of us."
"It was an absolute pleasure to welcome our guest speakers and hear their views on import and export matters, as well as the challenges and opportunities facing the sector. It's important for our members to see progress with international trade agreements, so this event also provided an excellent platform to discuss the issues ahead and, most importantly, how best to collectively tackle them," Jones added.
