Alcoa’s ASTRAEA process can convert unused aluminium scrap to high quality products

EDITED BY : SARNALI CHAKRABORTY 2MINS READ

Alcoa is working on a technology to convert low-quality aluminium scrap to a purity level that exceeds that of commercial smelters, potentially allowing sources of discarded aluminium scrap, known as Zorba, to be utilised.

According to Alcoa, their ASTRAEA process can purify any aluminium scrap to a high enough degree to possibly generate a new value chain. Alcoa's technological roadmap contains elements that will assist the business achieve its objective of creating a sustainable aluminium sector, including the ASTRAEA process.

Alcoa’s ASTRAEA process can convert unused aluminium scrap to high quality products

The majority of smelters produce P1020, or commodity-grade metal. This means there's 0.1 percent silicon and 0.2 percent iron in it. Depending on the technique utilised, most smelters have the technological competence to manufacture up to P0404, with a few outliers. There are two options on the market that can convert P0610 or P1020 into better grades.

Alcoa’s ASTRAEA™ process converts post-consumer scrap into high purity aluminum

Alcoa's ASTRAEA process, on the other hand, can beneficiate any post-consumer aluminium scrap, independent of alloy combination, up to P0101. This pure metal might then be mixed with less pure scrap to create a metal that fulfils purity requirements, so increasing the availability of post-consumer scrap that can be utilised as raw material. Most rolling mill and extrusion applications would require a high level of purity.

Zorba, auto shred aluminium trash, was Alcoa's first raw material for this technique. Zorba is mostly used to build engine blocks for gas-powered automobiles, which can tolerate less-pure junk as a raw material since the industry is unable to remove trace metals. However, as the popularity of electric vehicles develops, the gas-powered sector is steadily dwindling. Electric car engines demand higher-purity aluminium; therefore Zorba is becoming less popular.

Outlook For The Indian Aluminium Industry

According to the International Aluminium Institute (IAI), to meet industrial decarbonization objectives for the 1.5-degree scenario specified in the Paris Agreement, post-consumer scrap recycling must grow by 55 percent above 2018 levels by 2030.
