The global aluminium recycling segment has been in the spotlight this week due to a number of events. To begin with, PyroGenesis Canada Inc. joined Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), as the new General Supporter member. This was followed by the news that the Aluminium Association and the Can Manufacturers Institute coming up with an updated analysis showing the aluminium beverage container's numerous environmental benefits over competitor packaging materials. Consumers recycle aluminium cans at a rate more than twice that of plastic (PET) bottles, according to the research, which updates numerous key performance indicators (KPI) for 2020.

On National Recycling Day on Monday, November 15, the Atlanta Hawks and State Farm Arena announced a multi-year partnership with Novelis, the world leader in aluminium rolling and recycling. The partnership has made Novelis an official aluminium recycling and proud sustainability partner on State Farm Arena’s journey to becoming a TRUE zero-waste venue. TRUE stands for Total Resource Use and Efficiency, a standard set by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), the world’s leading sustainability and health certification and credentialing body.
The Aluminium Association and the Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI) have produced an updated analysis highlighting the aluminium beverage container's continuous environmental benefits over competitor packaging materials. As per the study, consumers recycle aluminium cans at more than twice the rate of plastic (PET) bottles, which updates many key performance indicators (KPI) for 2020. Aluminium beverage cans also contain 3X to 20X more recycled content and are significantly more valuable as scrap than glass or PET bottles, making aluminium a primary driver of the financial sustainability of the US recycling system. The closed-loop circularity rate, which evaluates the proportion of recycled material used to go back into the same product – in this example, a new beverage container – is a brand-new KPI in this year's report.

The UK government's Environment Act has finally got Royal Assent, more than two years after it was initially presented. Environment Secretary George Eustice thinks the Act would offer "the most ambitious environmental programme of any country on earth," outlining the government's sustainability strategy, clarifying environmental governance post-Brexit, and mapping out the transition to a more circular economy. Legislative drivers to end species decrease by 2030, improve air quality, safeguard the health of our rivers, track deforestation, and revolutionise our waste management system are among the key provisions. These improvements will be driven by legally mandated objectives, with the newly formed Office for Environmental Protection holding both the government and public bodies accountable.

PyroGenesis Canada Inc. is a high-tech firm that develops, manufactures, and sells sophisticated plasma systems and sustainable solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and waste streams. Aluminium is seen as the "green" metal of the future, a designation that will remain contested until the emissions and hazardous waste problems linked with it are resolved. PyroGenesis is working on a variety of applications with that goal in mind, including salt-free aluminium recovery from dross (using its patented DROSRITETM process), re-purposing of dross residues (post-metal recovery), treatment of spent pot lining (SPL), and electrification of the industry through the use of plasma torches to replace fossil-fuel burners.

Alcoa is working on a technology to convert low-quality aluminium scrap to a purity level that exceeds that of commercial smelters, potentially allowing sources of discarded aluminium scrap, known as Zorba, to be utilised. According to Alcoa, their ASTRAEA process can purify any aluminium scrap to a high enough degree to possibly generate a new value chain. Alcoa's technological roadmap contains elements that will assist the business achieve its objective of creating a sustainable aluminium sector, including the ASTRAEA process.
