Alcoa fears shutdown, loss of 600 jobs

More than 600 Lowcountry jobs could be in jeopardy. Alcoa Mt. Holly, the Goose Creek aluminum manufacturer, says its power rates have become too pricey. If they're not lowered, the plant may shut down.
Alcoa has been negotiating with Santee Cooper for almost a year to try to come up with a lower cost.
Right now the plant is responsible for 640 jobs in the Lowcountry and has hundreds of millions of dollars of economic impact.
Inside the Alcoa plant it's a hands-on operation where a variety of products are produced at the aluminum plant and hundreds of people have a hand in the company. Some have been there for more than 30 years.
"We want the plant to stay open so we're working hard for it," says Alcoa part operator, James Capers. "We hope we can come to an agreement with Santee Cooper."
