The Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI) has urged the Indian government to abolish the 2.5 per cent Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on aluminium scrap, arguing that the measure would support the country's recycling industry and strengthen the circular economy. In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the association said removing the duty would reduce raw material costs for recyclers and downstream manufacturers while improving their competitiveness in global markets. Aluminium prices fell 1.6 per cent to settle at 338.45 after Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) restarted its Al Taweelah alumina refinery in the UAE following a shutdown of around three and a half months. Germany’s aluminium exports to the global market in the first quarter (Q1) of 2026 have taken a significant dip compared with the previous years. The cumulative exports in Q1 totalled around 469,178.09 tonnes, valued at USD 2.6 billion. Europe remained a major supplier of aluminium scrap to the global market during the first quarter of 2026. Although discussions on retaining more scrap within the region continued, export volumes remained much higher than imports. Demand from overseas secondary aluminium producers, together with Europe's well-developed recycling industry, kept scrap moving out of the region throughout the quarter. India's Aditya Birla Group has proposed an additional investment of USD 1.26 billion to expand the capacity of its Kansariguda alumina refinery in Odisha to 3 million tonnes per annum, according to the Odisha government. The expansion will be executed by the group's aluminium company, Hindalco Industries.
