Aluminum Dynamics plans $200M recycled aluminium slab facility in Mississippi
Recycled aluminium producer Aluminum Dynamics LLC will invest more than USD 200 million to build a recycled aluminium slab centre in Lowndes County, Mississippi, creating 100 new jobs. The facility, to be located in the Golden Triangle Industrial Park, will recycle aluminium-bearing materials, mainly used beverage cans, into 180,000 tonnes of aluminium slabs for the aluminium products industry. Operations are expected to begin in the first half of 2027. The Mississippi Development Authority is supporting the project through road and rail infrastructure improvements, while the facility will also qualify for tax incentives under the Mississippi Major Economic Impact Authority programme. LME aluminium prices drop after record surge but still hover above $3600/t
After a record growth rate the previous day, aluminium prices on the London Metal Exchange contracted overnight on Tuesday, April 14, albeit still standing above USD 3,600 per tonne. While the LME aluminium bid price shed off USD 41 per tonne, amounting to USD 3,624 per tonne, the LME aluminium cash offer price experienced a loss of USD 40.5 per tonne, amounting to USD 3,625 per tonne. LME aluminium 3-month bid price as well as offer price also decreased, but at a slower rate. Both prices dropped by USD 5 per tonne to stand at USD 3,565 per tonne and USD 3,566 per tonne, respectively. Dec-27 bid and offer prices closed at USD 3,017 per tonne and USD 3,022 per tonne as of April 14, which signalled an increase of 1 per cent. Secondary aluminium on track to add 22 MT of capacity as global projects gain momentum
With demand rising for low carbon aluminium, producers in several regions are accelerating plans to increase their secondary capacity. Much of the new capacity scheduled is concentrated in billets, slabs and ingots, which are increasingly becoming the main focus of recycling investments. Between 2022 and 2026, secondary additions are dominated by billets, which make up 11 million tonnes of the 22-million-tonne total. Their growing importance mirrors the expansion of extrusion and construction activity, where demand has remained consistently strong. Ohio-based aluminium billet and slab manufacturer Matalco Inc. is set to shut down its Canton, Ohio, facility this summer. This announcement is expected to impact the life of 71 employees, with layoffs beginning on June 6 and continuing over a period of up to 90 days. The company produces the billets and slabs using recycled aluminium. According to a letter dated April 8, 2025, submitted to the Ohio Office of Workforce Development, the plant will begin the closure process on June 6.
