Recycled aluminium producer Aluminum Dynamics LLC will invest more than USD 200 million to build a recycled aluminium slab centre in Lowndes County, Mississippi, creating 100 new jobs. The facility, to be located in the Golden Triangle Industrial Park, will recycle aluminium-bearing materials, mainly used beverage cans, into 180,000 tonnes of aluminium slabs for the aluminium products industry. Operations are expected to begin in the first half of 2027.

The Mississippi Development Authority is supporting the project through road and rail infrastructure improvements, while the facility will also qualify for tax incentives under the Mississippi Major Economic Impact Authority programme. Lowndes County is also providing support for the development.

Aluminum Dynamics Operations Manager Devin Crawford said, “We are eager to move forward with this project, and we appreciate the warm welcome and support that we have received from Gov. Tate Reeves and the state of Mississippi, as well as leaders from the Mississippi Development Authority and local leaders from the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors, the Lowndes County Industry Development Authority and the Golden Triangle Development Link.”

The new slab centre expands Aluminum Dynamics' presence in Mississippi, where the company is already developing a recycled-content flat-rolled aluminium mill in Columbus, announced in 2022. Parent company Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI) also operates a scrap-fed electric arc furnace steel mill at the site. Once fully ramped up, the Columbus rolling mill is expected to produce 650,000 tonnes of aluminium sheet annually for the automotive and beverage can sectors.

In June, SDI said it would relocate its planned second recycled aluminium slab production centre from Arizona to Mississippi, resulting in a USD 16 million second-quarter 2026 earnings reduction due to asset write-downs. The company said the move followed differences with Arizona state officials that created risks for the construction and operation of the facility. The Arizona project had also faced strong local opposition, with more than 3,700 people signing a petition against the proposed plant.

Meanwhile, SMS Group, which is supplying equipment for the Columbus rolling mill, said the project has entered its final commissioning phase. The company is completing work on rolling operations, automation, coil logistics, inspection systems and sustainability measures ahead of full commercial operations.

Commenting on the latest investment, Mississippi Development Authority Executive Director Bill Cork said, “There’s no stronger endorsement than a company choosing to reinvest where it has existing operations.”
