Vedanta Limited has been taking a variety of initiatives for a greater engagement of women in the aluminium industry. At present, women from Odisha’s local communities are increasingly stepping into technical roles at the Vedanta Aluminium refinery in Lanjigarh. Among these women employees is Priyanka Mahakhud, a control room operator at the company’s 5-million-tonne-per-annum alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, Odisha. Born and raised in the village, Mahakhud manages the refinery’s Distributed Control System (DCS), which functions as the operational nerve centre of the plant. She monitors key process parameters including temperature, pressure, flow and levels through real-time digital systems. At the same time, she is in charge of coordinating with field teams during start-ups, shutdowns and emergency situations.
Mahakhud began her academic journey at the region’s only English-medium school, the DAV Vedanta International School. Thereafter, she went on to pursue a BSc (Hons) in Zoology from Maharishi College of Natural Law, Bhubaneswar. She is now part of a postgraduate course in biotechnology, pursuing it via distance learning while simultaneously observing her responsibilities at the refinery.
Mahakhud has also become a role model within her family and community. She has been a beacon of inspiration for her sister, who is pursuing law in Cuttack. Her brother is studying engineering in Bhubaneswar.

The story of Priyanka Mahakhud throws light on Vedanta’s operations from a broader angle, whereby a greater number of young women from districts such as Kalahandi and Rayagada are entering professional roles after completing their higher education. The company has stated that many of these women are currently contributing to technical and operational functions traditionally dominated by men.
Her presence in the Lanjigarh alumina refinery’s central control room undelines a silent but meaningful transformation in the industry. As education, skill development and employment opportunities expand locally, more women are feeling motivated to participate directly in industrial operations and contribute to the regional economic development.
Through initiatives focused on education and inclusive hiring, Vedanta Aluminium establishes the aim to promote gender diversity and facilitate more young women from Lanjigarh and neighbouring areas to pursue professional careers and contribute to the region’s industrial growth.
