Vedanta Aluminium exports $3.5b as Jharsuguda SEZ contributes 6% of India’s goods exports

Vedanta Aluminium has become India’s second-largest exporter of goods from a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), recording exports of around USD 3.5 billion in FY26, according to the company.

Its SEZ facility in Jharsuguda, Odisha, contributed around 6 per cent of India’s total SEZ goods exports during the financial year ended March 2026. The company supplies customers in more than 60 countries, including markets in Europe, the United States, Japan and Southeast Asia.

Vedanta Aluminium’s export portfolio includes primary and value-added aluminium products such as billets, wire rods, rolled products, primary foundry alloys and ingots. It also includes the company’s low-carbon Restora aluminium range, manufactured using renewable energy with GHG emissions of below 4 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per tonne of aluminium.

These products are used in industries including automotive, aerospace, electrical equipment, construction and packaging. Demand is also emerging from renewable energy, electric mobility, artificial intelligence infrastructure and data centres.

Jharsuguda facility supports global supply

The company’s Jharsuguda operations include an annual aluminium smelting capacity of 1.8 million tonnes. In 2013, Vedanta Aluminium had sought an extension of SEZ benefits for its 1.25-million-tonne aluminium smelter project at Jharsuguda. The company had already invested around INR 120 billion (now USD 253 million) in the smelter complex at that time. 

In May 2024, the company announced that its Jharsuguda SEZ smelter had received certification against the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s Chain of Custody Standard V2 (2022). The company had previously received ASI Performance Standard certification for its primary aluminium products from the Jharsuguda SEZ facility and BALCO in Chhattisgarh. These certifications cover standards across the aluminium supply chain, adding to the facility’s role in Vedanta’s global aluminium supply.

India's SEZs recorded around USD 134 billion in goods and services exports between April and December 2025, based on trade figures cited by the company. Services made up the larger share at about USD 84.5 billion, or nearly 63 per cent, while goods exports stood at around USD 50 billion, accounting for about 37 per cent.

Kumar further added,  “As SEZs become increasingly important to India’s trade and manufacturing ambitions, we remain focused on strengthening our capabilities and supporting the country’s goal of becoming a global manufacturing and export hub.”
