Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has announced the expansion of wire rod production capacity at its subsidiary, Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO), as part of its broader growth strategy to scale overall aluminium production to 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). This move comes amid surging domestic demand driven by the rapid development of India’s digital infrastructure and industrial growth.
With India accelerating its 5G rollout, rural broadband expansion, smart city projects, and cloud infrastructure, aluminium is gaining prominence as the material of choice. Its high conductivity, corrosion resistance, lightweight and strength make it ideal for modern infrastructure needs. BALCO’s BIS-certified aluminium wire rods are playing a pivotal role in supporting this momentum, enabling seamless signal transmission and enhanced network reliability.
In FY25 alone, BALCO produced over 2,00,000 MTPA of aluminium wire rods, with the entire output catering to domestic markets, particularly in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. The company offers high-performance wire rod grades designed for critical applications, including conductors, cable sheathing, tower grounding and optical fibre cabling.
BALCO also holds the distinction of being India’s first recipient of the BIS 5484 certification for alloy wire rods, reinforcing its position as a pioneer in product quality and innovation. The growing demand from sectors such as telecom and power transmission, driven by digital adoption, urbanisation, and energy diversification, has prompted the company to accelerate strategic growth projects that will double its overall aluminium production from 0.57 MTPA to 1 MTPA.
“Aluminium wire rods are indispensable to building a resilient and future-ready digital backbone for India,” said Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium. “We are proud to offer a BIS-certified portfolio tailored to the evolving needs of the telecom and power sectors. With our capacity expansion at BALCO, we are well-positioned to meet rising demand for advanced conductive materials while upholding our sustainability commitments.”
Beyond telecom and power, BALCO’s aluminium wire rods are also essential in industries such as automotive, electrical appliances, and steel, making them a critical enabler of India’s broader industrial transformation.
Vedanta Aluminium, a division of Vedanta Limited, produced 2.42 million tonnes of aluminium in FY25, accounting for over half of India’s total output. The company is a leader in value-added aluminium products and ranks 2nd globally in the 2024 S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment for the aluminium sector, underscoring its dedication to sustainable growth and innovation in promoting aluminium as the ‘Metal of the Future.’
