
To balance the downturn in primary aluminium industry, the US aluminium industry is boosting up the secondary recovery with renewed initiatives.
According to the aluminium recycling statistics published by the U.S. Geological Survey and Department of Interior the U.S. aluminium industry purchased an estimated 751 million pounds of aluminium scrap during May 2016. This records an increase of up 10.6 per cent over the total purchased data of 679 million pounds in May 2015.
U.S. Geological Survey reports that recovery of aluminium and aluminium alloys totalled 657 million pounds in May, an increase of 11.2 per cent year-over-year. As per the year-to-date data till May, 2016, the recovery of aluminium from scrap totalled an estimated 3,238 million pounds according to the preliminary estimate. This also shows an increase of 4.6 per cent from the 2015 year-to-date total of 3,096 million.
U.S. exports of scrap were a total of 1,163 million pounds YTD, down 10.8 per cent from the same period in 2015. This export of scrap is not included in the consumption statistics of the government.
