US aluminium plates, sheets and bars exports grow M-o-M in June 2020 by 25%, total exports in H1 decrease by 27% Y-o-Y

According to the US Geological Survey data, the United States exported 49,800 tonnes of aluminium plates, sheets and bars in June 2020, up by 9,900 tonnes or 24.81 per cent month-on-month. In May, the United States exports were 39,900 tonnes after declining by 8,500 tonnes or 17.56 per cent from 48,400 tonnes in April. In March, the export volume was 69,900 tonnes, meaning April saw a month-on-month decline of 30.76 per cent. So, the hike in the US aluminium semis exports in June was after two consecutive months of decline.

On a year-on-year basis, the US aluminium plates, sheets and bars exports in June 2020 decreased by 27.41 per cent from 68,600 tonnes.

The United States’ total aluminium plates, sheets and bars exports in the first six months of 2020 came in at 345,000 tonnes, down from 448,000 tonnes during the same period last year.

In the June quarter, the exports were at 138,100 tonnes, 33.29 per cent lower from 207,000 tonnes in the March quarter or Q1.

Mexico was the leading destination of the United States aluminium semis exports in June 2020. The former imported 20,500 tonnes compared to 13,800 tonnes in May and 28,700 tonnes in June 2019. So, month-on-month, the United States aluminium plates, sheets and bars exports to Mexico increased by 48.55 per cent, but decreased over the year by 28.57 per cent in June.

After Mexico, Canada was the second leading importer of the United States’ aluminium semis, securing 18,100 tonnes in June, up from 15,100 tonnes from May but down from 27,300 tonnes in June 2019.
