Update-Chalco Liancheng Aluminum Co. puts 500KA pot into production

Chalco Liancheng Aluminum Co. announced it is putting its newly-constructed 500 KA pre-baked aluminium reduction pots into production as part of its expansion project.To date the company has put 65% of the newly-built reduction pots into production and completed the commissioning of its second potline including 92 reduction pots. The company began commissioning its first potline in March 2011 and is scheduled to start up its no.3 potline in November this year. The project, which has a total capacity of 388,000 tpy, is expected to ramp up to full capacity by the end of this year.
CRU View: The Chinese government has issued directives to producers to close smelters operating outdated technology (below 100kA) following its energy efficiency campaign launched in H2 2010. At the same time, the government has been actively encouraging smelters to adopt advanced technology to consume energy more efficiently. Liancheng Aluminium Co.’s 500kA smelter is one such example and we expect to see projects with high amperage (more than 300kA) being rolled out across the country to substitute the old ones
