The US imports of total aluminium increases 8.7% YoY and 4.6% MoM in June 2019

The US imports of aluminium including scrap increased 40,000 tonnes or 8.7 per cent year-on-year to stand at 500,000 tonnes in June 2019. On a month on month comparison, the import volume increased 4.6 per cent from May’s import volume of 478,000 tonnes, according to the latest Mineral Industry Survey report from US Geological Survey.

In the first half of 2019, total aluminium imports stood at 2.93 million tonnes as compared to 3.37 million tonnes in the first half of 2018. This represents a drop of 440,000 tonnes or 13.06 per cent year-on-year.

The US imported 808,000 tonnes of aluminium semi-finished products (plates, sheets, bars, etc.) in January-June 2019, with a year-on-year increase of 10.23 per cent. The US had imported 733,000 tonnes of these products in January-June 2018.

Imports of semi-finished products increased by 32.86 per cent in June compared with the same period last year. Imports stood at 131,000 tonnes in June 2019, from 98,600 tonnes in June 2018. On a month-on-month comparison, exports stood 2.96 per cent lower than May’s import volume of 135,000 tonnes.
