$1.5b Quebec AP60 expansion puts Rio Tinto at heart of low-carbon aluminum race
The low-carbon aluminum market has stepped into a more competitive phase as producers invest in cleaner smelting technologies, renewable power and new downstream applications. Rio Tinto’s $1.5 billion AP60 smelter expansion in Quebec is the latest major development, adding around 160,000 metric tons per annum (MPTA) of primary aluminum capacity when fully operational by the end of 2026. The project will lift total AP60 production at Complexe Arvida to about 220,000 MPTA while supplying lower-carbon aluminum to transportation, construction, electrical and consumer-goods customers. The Quebec expansion is expected to cut emissions by approximately 290,000 MPTA compared with the older Arvida technology, strengthening the case for energy-efficient, hydropower-based primary aluminum...

ALUMINIUM 2026: Hydro invests to strengthen resilience across the aluminium value chain
Since ALUMINIUM 2024, Hydro has entered several long-term renewable power agreements, invested in new production and recycling capacity in Europe, entered new partnerships with brands like Mercedes-Benz and CHANEL Fragrance and Beauty as well as customer agreements covering close to 360,000 tonnes of low-carbon aluminium for Europe’s electricity infrastructure. Hydro’s Alunorte gas disruption could cost $210m across Q3 and Q4
Alunorte, Hydro’s alumina refinery in Brazil, has cut alumina production to 50 per cent after disruptions to its natural gas supply from CELBA. The disruption could cost Hydro’s Bauxite & Alumina business up to USD 100 million in Q3 2026. Alunorte could also face another USD 110 million impact in Q4 due to higher gas costs. CELBA informed Alunorte in August 2026 that it was facing disruptions to natural gas supplies. The refinery has not received the gas covered by its contract and is now buying gas at spot market prices. Alunorte has cut production to 50 per cent to match the gas currently available.
