The Sumitomo Chemical Company, a Japanese chemical industry giant, has recently developed and launched a new range of high-purity alumina products, titled ELA series, that are intended for use in the ever-evolving semiconductor industry. The new range of products is specifically intended for use in making semiconductors for AI and other electronic devices.
{alcircleadd}The company plans to strengthen its position in the high-purity alumina market by expanding its offerings for advanced semiconductor-related applications while accelerating innovation in inorganic materials. Rising semiconductor integration and growing performance demands have increased the need for encapsulant materials that minimise alpha radiation, a known cause of semiconductor malfunction, while also improving heat dissipation efficiency.

The ELA series was developed by Dongwoo Fine-Chem Co., Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Chemical, based in South Korea. According to the company, the ELA series is the world’s first product line to combine ultra-low alpha radiation with high-purity fine spherical alumina technology.
The new product line delivers excellent thermal conductivity alongside extremely low radiation levels, making it suitable for highly reliable semiconductor applications, including AI-focused advanced chips and next-generation electronic components. Sumitomo Chemical stated that the particle size of the alumina can be controlled with precision down to several micrometres or less. The surface characteristics can also be customised to meet specific customer requirements across different semiconductor applications.
In addition to the ELA series, the company is further expanding its portfolio of high-purity alumina products used in ceramic equipment materials and semiconductor process materials. As semiconductor manufacturing technologies continue to advance, the demand for materials with higher performance and greater purity has become increasingly important.
Sumitomo Chemical also highlighted progress with its previously launched NXA series of ultra-fine alumina products. The company said customer evaluations confirmed significant performance improvements when the NXA series was used in semiconductor-related applications.
With the advanced semiconductor market demanding higher-performance peripheral materials, Sumitomo Chemical sees increasing opportunities for inorganic material solutions. The company plans to position both the ELA and NXA series as core growth drivers for its high-purity alumina business while expanding sales globally.
