AMAG Austria Metall AG, a producer and supplier of primary aluminium, premium cast, and rolled aluminium products, announced that it entered into a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with ImWind, a wind power pioneer from Lower Austria.
{alcircleadd}As per the agreement signed, AMAG will secure green electricity for its headquarters in Ranshofen, Upper Austria, for the next 15 years to meet 20 per cent of its annual requirement.
ImWind will start supplying green electricity to AMAG from the end of 2024. The electricity will be produced through new wind turbines. An output of 18 megawatts of electricity will reduce more than 26,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, equivalent to the carbon emissions of more than 10,000 cars per year, compared to conventional electricity generation.
This power purchase agreement represents AMAG’s commitment towards decarbonising the aluminium production process and underpins the company’s sustainability goals. AMAG in Ranshofen has been using green electricity since 2018, and through this agreement, it secures a long-term deal.
Helmut Kaufmann, CEO and Chief Technology Officer of AMAG Austria Metall AG, said: “The groundbreaking partnership between AMAG and ImWind is a milestone on the path to decarbonisation. With the long-term PPA, AMAG is securing clean green electricity for the Ranshofen location and is thus sending a clear signal for a sustainable energy supply. The purchase of renewable electricity from three new ImWind wind turbines will advance the achievement of our decarbonisation goals. This partnership underlines our commitment to a green future and shows that we are determined to make a significant contribution to climate protection.”
Georg Waldner, CEO of ImWind, said: “The successful implementation of this PPA is a milestone for ImWind and underlines our commitment to a sustainable energy future and the expansion of renewable energies in Austria. By partnering with AMAG, we not only demonstrate our ability to develop innovative solutions for green transformation, but also strengthen the competitiveness of our industry. We are convinced that such alliances are crucial to secure Austria as a business location and to advance the decarbonisation of our industry.”
