SMM Aluminum Products Data Analysis for September 2013
China’s aluminum semis output during September hit 3.64 million mt, a gain of 32.65% YoY and 6.93% MoM. YTD output through September hit 28.57 million mt, jumping 33.56% from a year ago, according to the CNIA.
End-users stepped up raw material purchases in July and August due to strong downstream demand in 1H 2013. However, demand in September, which is normally a peak-demand month, did not grow significantly, so end-users began to consume inventories on hand, cutting demand for aluminum semis. In response, operating rates during September at aluminum semis producers were little changed, with no notable increase in output.
China’s aluminum semis exports in September rose from a year ago, but remained virtually unchanged from a month ago.
China exported 270,000 mt of aluminum semis during September, up 12.5% YoY, but unchanged from August levels. Exports during the first nine months of this year reached 2.3 million mt, up 7.98% YoY.
In the breakdown, aluminum extrusion exports in September fell 30.68% YoY, to 49,500 mt, and YTD exports from January through September also fell 30.94% YoY, to 455,300 mt, dragged down by falling demand in developed countries.

Strong price advantages for Chinese products in overseas market contributed to the growth in China’s aluminum plate/sheet and strip exports.
Aluminum foil exports in September rose 14.24% YoY, to 62,300 mt, and with YTD exports through September also up 16.91% YoY, to 570,500 mt.
